Saunderstown is a historic district located within the towns of Narragansett and North Kingstown on the shores of Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island. Saunderstown is known for being the site of the historic village of Wickford and the birthplace of artist, Gilbert Stuart, who painted the famous portrait of George Washington that appears on the U.S. one-dollar bill. The village of Saunderstown is home to the Gilbert Stuart Birthplace and Museum. Included in the museum complex is the house in which Stuart was born, as well as a functional gristmill and a nature trail. Also in Saunderstown is the Casey Farm, an 18th century plantation that still grows organic vegetables, herbs and flowers. It's operated by the organization, Historic New England. Things to do at Saunderstown/Narragansett Bay include sailing, boating, fishing, kayaking, swimming, seal watching, beachcombing and golf. The historic villages nestled along the coast also offer plenty of waterfront dining, shopping, and more. The historic area called Wickford within Saunderstown contains one of the largest collections of 18th century dwellings on the eastern seaboard. Come visit Saunderstown on Narragansett Bay and you'll immediately see why this region is called the "Jewels of the Bay."

Saunderstown Weather & Climate

Southeastern Massachusetts has a continental climate with maritime influences. Some areas are classified as humid continental, and others are humid subtropical. Summers are warm and humid with the possibility of thunderstorms. Occasionally these storms are severe with hail and heavy downpours. Winters are cold and snowy, with most snowfall occurring between December and March. Spring and autumn are mild, but changeable depending on the wind direction and jet stream. Cool sea breezes are common, especially in spring. Fog is also commonplace, especially in spring and early summer. Tropical storms or hurricanes are possible, especially in early autumn, but not common. Most hurricanes weaken by the time they reach Massachusetts.
